230 KV Breaker-and-a-Half Station Expansion:

The ASSET Company provided engineering services for the addition of five breakers to an existing breaker-and-a-half substation to accommodate the connection of one new station service and two new GSU transformers. Complete protection and control design, including settings for the bus differential, tap bus differential, and transformer protection relays, were elements of the workscope. Grounding design, conduit plans, extensive modifications of existing panels, interface with plant controls and protection, cable list, and interconnections were also developed.

AutoCAD Overlay was used to create hybrid image/drawing files from existing manually prepared plant drawings. This allowed drawings to be prepared electronically without the risk of manual/electronic transcription errors. Also, future alterations can be made easily.

138 KV Power Plant Substation, Transmission Line Protection, and Modification of Intertie Ring Bus Station

For a new 208 MVA power plant, The ASSET Company prepared drawings for the protection, raceways, grounding, plant, and utility interfaces. The protection and control scope was comprised of step-up/auxiliary transformer relays, unit differentials, line protection using charge comparison and line current differential relays, and protection modification in the existing ring bus yard. Also included was definition of fiber optic cable and equipment for protection, transfer tripping, control, and telemetry.

Electrical studies included short circuit, relay coordination, and development of detailed settings sheets. The balance of The ASSET Company design scope consisted of interfaces with plant DCS and protection and utility station design requirements, definition of low voltage AC and DC loads, ground grid and raceway designs, and coordination of equipment within the plant's control room.

345 KV Substation Expansion and Complete Station Protection and Metering Upgrade

The ASSET Company played a key role in a recent steel mill substation expansion. ASSET provided engineering services for the addition of two 100 MVA transformers and 345 KV breakers to accommodate capacity additions to the existing furnaces and a new process.

The engineering scope also included several 34.5 KV feeders to serve new plant loads as well as new electrically operated bus tie switches. These additions provide quick sectionalizing capability in case of breaker or transformer failure or expanded load requirements. The control room was enlarged to house new relay panels, and existing solid state single function relays were replaced with microprocessor-based multifunction protection and state of the art power quality metering.

Power Plant Metering Addition

For a three-unit peaking power plant, The ASSET Company designed, furnished, and installed a totalizing metering system. The project involved interfacing analog and pulse signals from five existing meters and three transducers to develop instantaneous real and reactive power flows for one of the three units, allocating station service loads in relationship to power produced (in real time) and sending these resulting values to the RTU.

Real and reactive energy values are logged in 15-minute intervals for the utility to read via dial-up MV-90. Pulse repeaters were added to provide needed inputs to the PML 7700 ION meter and the existing RTU. The metering equipment was mounted and shop-wired to a subpanel to shorten the field installation time.
